Personal/Goals Statements

Personal Statement

History is a passion of mine. Inspired at a young age by my grandmother a teacher and amateur historian, I decided to become a professional historian. After obtaining my undergraduate degree at Arkansas State University in 2012, I deviated from my plan slightly.

I became a seasonal park ranger for the National Park Service where I combined my love of history with my love of the outdoors. As a park ranger interpreter, I gained experience in historical research, living history, and archival work. Over the course of several years, I figured I would wind up working in education, so I obtained a Master of Science in Post Secondary Education.

However, I found a position at Niobrara National Scenic River as a Park Ranger I where once again I combined history, education, and the outdoors to inspire others. Over the course of the last five years my desire to solidify my historical knowledge on Early American History grew and I’m glad that University of Nebraska-Kearney has an online graduate school.

UNK is a blessing in my academic career. The courses and professor’s delved into historical topics and offered ideas and resources that have expanded my knowledge and passion for American History. Learning never stops– neither does history. And I plan to continue learning and writing about history.

Goals Statement

Upon completing my Master of Arts in History from UNK, I intend to continue my career in the National Park Service. The background in Early American History and Native American Studies complements my career choices in interpretation. I can create educational based lessons or interpretive programs that will envoke emotion with visitors.

Ideally, I will move from giving living history programs to Culture Resources within the NPS. The Cultural Resources, Partnerships, and Science Directorate provides leadership for the protection and interpretation of the nation’s heritage and guides national historic preservation programs. One day I would love to move into the directorate.

Currently, I am the Program Manager of Interpretation, Education & Volunteers for Niobrara National Scenic River. Combining my work experience with all the knowledge and skills I’ve gained at UNK the transition into Culture Resources will happen.
